Additional Support Needs (ASN) in GME / Feumalachdan Taic a Bharrachd (FTB) ann am FtG
I recently contributed a short piece to the current Comann nam Pàrant (Nàiseanta) newsletter, regarding the additional support needs (ASN) in Gaelic Medium Education (GME) group that is now running here in Glasgow. Full text reproduced below.

An ASN in GME group is now running in Glasgow, which has been set up by, Emma Bolger, in collaboration with Kathryn Farrow, Quality Improvement Officer for Parent Partnerships within Glasgow City Council Education Services. The group is open to children and all parents/carers/children/siblings of children aged 0- P7 who currently attend or are planning to attend GME or Gaelic Early Years provision.
The group runs meet up events where like experienced parents/carers can have a chat and access information, while the children play in a safe, inclusive environment. Glasgow Life playworkers have attended the sessions to support the children, meaning parents are able take time out. A child does not need a formal identification of an ASN to attend any the meet ups, and siblings are encouraged to come along too. Gaelic-speaking facilitators and Gaelic Bookbug attend and there are other resources available to help support families in GME whose children have ASN. Details of events are distributed via schools and GME social media.
The group is well attended, much needed and has received great feedback from attendees. If you are thinking you might like to set up a similar group in your area, to keep costs down and evidence good partnership working, the group uses council facilities that are available free of charge to ASN groups where possible. To ensure the meet up locations move around the city and to be able to offer refreshments and snacks to attendees, the group also applies for funding. For example, we held our most recent event during and with the support of Seachdain na Gàidhlig 2025.
