Dyslexia and Gaelic Medium Education (GME)
Dyslexia Scotland run a network of branches across Scotland which mostly provide information and support to parents of children with dyslexia through events, talks and sharing experiences.
Having identified a need for specific support for pupils in Gaelic medium education (GME), I contacted Dyslexia Scotland to explore how we can achieve this.
- March 2021: first meeting (attended by parents/carers of pupils from the 3 GME schools in Glasgow) which was an informal chance to share good practice and practical tips and raise any concerns or difficulties. Teachers could attend but were not there in a capacity to answer specific questions about individual pupils.
- August 2021: session open to all involved in GME on Assistive Tech for pupils in Gaelic Medium Education with CALL Scotland and Dyslexia Scotland.
- Identify common difficulties encountered by pupils, families and teaching staff which are specific to pupils with dyslexia in GME (for example: Gaelic resources for pupils such as books and assistive technology; equity with pupils in English Medium Education; identification of dyslexia in pupils in GME including variations across Scotland; teacher training; information for parents
- To consider our key audience and how to engage with them
- Identify good practice, useful research and tools and pool these together
- Consider what we could usefully do to help pupils, families and teachers.
- Any agreed remit would need to be achievable within the group’s capacity, mindful that all branches are volunteer-run
- A comprehensive information leaflet and information portal on Dyslexia and GME
- Translation of resources into Gaelic
- Further events
In collaboration with Glasgow City Council Education Services, I have established an ASN in GME group, for parents or carers of a child/children who has an additional support need and attends, or plans to attend Gaelic Medium early years or primary school.
ASN in GME events
I've been successful in my application for a grant to run an ASN in GME event during Seachdain na Gàidhlig 2025. The event will take place on Saturday 1st March 2025.
Our first ASN meet up took place on Friday 27th September, 10.00-12.00 at Linn Park Adventure Playground. The event was open to all Parents/Carers/Children/Siblings of children aged 0-P7 who currently attend or are planning to attend GME or Gaelic Early Years provision. We welcomed Gaelic-speaking facilitators including Gaelic Bookbug, and had resources available to help support families in GME. 16 separate families attended the event.
Your child does not need a formal identification of an ASN to attend any of our meet-ups. This is a get together where like-experienced people can have a chat, and the kids can play in a safe, inclusive environment. We are joined by Gaelic-speaking facilitators, and will have resources available to help support families in GME whose children have ASN. Details of our meet-up events will be distributed via schools and GME social media.
